So, after thinking about it for a few months, I broke down and put together a new gaming computer, and I've ventured back into to the world of Windows. It's been quite a while since I've had a computer that could handle 3d graphics well (a few forays into getting stuff working on my ancient (though upgraded) G4 cube met with highly varied success).
So, what's been released in the last 5 years or so that's nifty? I've been out of the game (ha!) for many many years (I want to say that it was a year or two before Half-Life 2 was released, and that's 2003).
Stuff I've enjoyed in the past:
Bioware's isometric (A)D&D-based RPGs (Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale)
Straight up FPS (Quake, Unreal, Half-Life, Serious Sam)
RPGesque FPS (Deux Ex, System Shock II)
First Person Sneakers (Thief, No One Lives Forever)
3rd person action games (Jedi Knight II, Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, Max Payne)
Stuff already on my list:
The Orange Box (the straw that broke the camel's back -- Portal is lots of fun, and I never did play HL2 or its episodes. Even Team Fortress II looks pretty nifty)
Thief: Deadly Shadows
Bioshock
Stuff I don't really care for:
RTS -- the only one I really liked was Starcraft, and even then I was never much good at it
MMOs -- I'm not much of a "plays with others" sort, and have very little interest in subscribing to a game when my play time might vary greatly.
Military shooters (Call of Duty, etc) -- I just never had the interest in WWII/Vietnam sims
Bonus points for older games if they're available on Steam. They can be hard to track down sometimes (I picked up the Hitman series that way -- I'd only ever played a small bit of Hitman II, and it was a bunch of fun). My box should be able to handle just about anything I can throw at it -- I recall hearing that Bioshock was a resource hog, and I can play the demo at native res on my 20" widescreen (1680x1050).
