Gorram identity theft!

Some douchebag at the North Central Kansas Technical College, Beloit Kansas campus, just charged $370 to Buy.com on one of my credit cards. Given his address, he’s either in Dorm 5 or 6 here: http://www.ncktc.edu/documents/Beloit_Campus.htm and http://maps.google.com/maps?q=campus+circle,+Beloit,+KS in case any of you have tacnukes just lying around.

I first noticed something was up this morning when I got to work, and the CC company sent me a helpful email saying that my account profile had been changed and that if I didn’t do it, I should call them immediately. So I did that, changed all my info back, and changed my password.

Then, at 1:15pm, I got *another* one. I should have just canceled that card right away this morning, because when I logged in to check it out while on hold with the company, there were $370 in pending transactions to Buy.com. Stupid 20/20 hindsight. I *did* just place an order to buy.com on Monday, but using a completely different card -- so I’m pretty sure my buy.com account is OK. Changing the password anyway though.

Well, the card number has been canceled now (albeit too late), and I’m getting a new one in a week or so. However, I have to wait for the stupid charge to clear before I can contest it. I really should have written down what he changed the billing address for the card to, though I know the CC company has that info too.

It was the primary card I used at Gencon. Not every vendor at conventions has a phone line or internet access to run things through a real CC machine, so some of them use those old style carbon paper machines. I wonder if one of the parties (either me or the vendor) lost their copy of the receipt. It is kind of strange that they’d wait 4 months to use the card, but I’m not seeing many chances for the number to have gotten out since I don’t use it much.
